Superyacht Interior Design Trends

Updated: Mar 23, 2022

The boating industry may be steeped in tradition, but it is also one of the more innovative industries.

New materials and techniques, coupled with changing consumer demand has resulted in significant innovations in the design of superyachts.

Just as is happening with homes, many owners are moving away from the traditional formal living spaces to something more informal and suitable for a wide range of uses.

On a current KGID project, the superyacht owners have requested that we remove the formal dining area and saloon to make way for a piano lounge with a full size bar.

The space provides an elegant club feel which will be ideal for larger groups, pre or post dinner drinks or a relaxing afternoon watching sport on the TV. It is also a wonderful space for at port day charters.

Owners or those chartering a superyacht often want to continue with their normal routines when on holiday, so gyms and wellness centres are a common addition allowing guests to workout, have their hair done, enjoy a manicure, pedicure, or even a massage.

Maximising natural light is a great design technique which we have adopted and notice is being used more within superyachts.

At sea this is such a luxury, one that of course adds to the view, gives a contemporary feel and makes spaces feel larger.

Fold down and slide out balconies are also a wonderful addition putting clients more at one with the ocean environment, particularly on lower levels when anchored.

Across the board there is a move toward more of a sustainable design. Whether that is the engineering of the propellers, timber veneers or fabrics or the reuse of existing materials where possible. We’re also seeing luxury sailing yachts increase in demand.

We are always on the lookout for quality sustainably produced products and use local suppliers where possible.

Adding another touch of home, we’ve also noticed an increasing trend of the use of plants on board, with some larger yachts including small grass gardens for their dogs! Well selected greenery is such a wonderful thing to have in your home for health and vitality, not matter if it is on land or the high seas.
